Tulsa fishing

I went this Saturday with my dad and we fished around the spillway which was running pretty fast. I caught several sand bass and a striped bass or hybrid... all of them fairly small, but fun none the less. My dad caught more of the same and a crappie. We were fishing some road runner heads and black/chart solid tubes. We also had a couple of poles out with shrimp on the bottom to try to catch some of the catfish that are apparently in there (several 16-20" dead ones washed up along the bank), but all I caught was a turtle...

Tulsa has about 15 fishing holes in the city according to the OKDWC website.

Most of them are all just perch, bass, and catfish ponds in various parks, but its nice to hit one on the way to work or on the way home some times.

I'm a bit skeptical of the reviews written for some of those ponds. I have fished both MS6 and Metcalf pond extensively without catching a single bass. Lots of small crappie and perch though.

Those surveys were conducted 10 years or more ago... which I would have assumed would only mean things were better... but after reading Cricket George's treatise on pond care it seems there's a lot that can go wrong in a pond in that ammount of timeI haven't hit up MS6 yet but I did catch about a 2lb bass out of the Garden Ridge Pond and I caught a dinky little 8" bass this morning at Nelson Park. There are some pretty big gills in Metcalf we caught some on some shrimp pieces the other day. The weather has been pretty crazy lately and I've only been fishing them for the last month.

I'm attaching a pic of the one I caught at GardenRidge Pond... caught it off a Rebel Crickpopper. You pretty much have to fish top water there because of all the vegetation.

Very pretty fish. MS6 has some large gills as well.

I hit up MS6 this morning out of curiosity. The rains last night had brought the water up to about 3-4 feet above normal but it has almost all receeded by 7 when I got there this morning. There was still some draining into Mingo Creek (which looked like it had crested at about 10' above its level this morning).

I fished all around it with an electric chicken colored Bobby Garland Stroll'r on a mo'glo jig head with a spinner. I caught one Bass with a severe underbite... I had about 3 more strikes all up close to the bank but I suspect they were bluegills and couldn't get the hole bait in their mouths.

Looking at this fish and the other Bass i posted.. they look like maybe they are spotted bass and not largemouth. Their mouths are lined up with their eyes.

This one was just weird looking...

Has anyone fished this pond. It is directly east of the Creek Turnpike between 51st and 61st st. I think this picture was taken when it was first built because everywhere where you see sand in the picture is now covered up by water. You can access it on 51st street through an old dirt road. Someone told me that it was owned by allied waste management but it doesnt seem to be used for dumping purposes. This pond is huge.

I ran into a local at Lynn Lane reservoir the other night and apart from him telling me the history of fishing at that location he noted that on 61st street way out east they were going to be building another reservoir soon. That's not what you are seeing though, he said that was a strip pit. I didn't ask him who owned it though.



I caught quite a few small crappie Sunday morning and I went out their Saturday night and caught one that was about 12" long. I put him back since I didn't have any more that size to keep company.

I was using some Bobby Garland stroll'rs in the mo-glo color and fishing in front of the spillway where the break in the current is. They were about 4' deep or so there.

Anyone can fish it as there is a road leading right down to it. A bunch of idiots dumped a bunch of trash on each side of that road too. I wonder if there is any fish in there. I have been meaning to get out there and try it but I've been way too busy.
