Each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, my boy and I cook a big lunch. We box it up, and deliver it to all the WWII vets that i know. I find them throughout the year in town with their hat on. It is generally at a restaurant. Dinner is on me when i see this! I get their address and number so i can bring them thank you gifts 2x year. I was unable to make all the rounds Wednesday because the fires had to be fought. I was able to get one more done today with just some fresh fruit. These are the most proud, loyal, and appreciative people i have ever ran into. I have been bringing them BBQ or fish for the last 2 years. This time was fruit, haha. All this to say, never pass a veteran without saying THANK You!
This guy always has his hat on. I talk to him alot. He will tell his story. He remembers getting inlisted, went to California, got on a ship to Hawaii. There he received 2 weeks of training, and then loaded all the men up in landing craft and headed for Iwo Jima. He said you can not imagine how rough those flat bottom boats were going across the ocean. He lost his arm after 2 days pinned down on the beaches. Amazing man!
