The zebra mussels are easily killed by raising the water level, in this case by the floods. When the level is raised by a flood and held at that level for a time the bottom water of the lake, which is anaerobic, will be raised. The mussels can not detach from their place and move, therefore they suffocate. This has happened at Kaw Lake several times as well as other lakes.
