Oologah Archives

Made it out for about 3 hours this afternoon. I fished the same 2 areas we have fished the last 2 trips and it was definately different today. The first area I fished there were very few shad showing on the locator. The last 2 trips the shad have been stacked up and the crappie had been with them. I did catch 5 BIG Crappie in that area but that was in 2 hours of fishing and they were the only 5 bites I had. I trolled about 1/2 mile through the area and found some big shad balls. I stopped for about 10 minutes in 2 different areas that showed a lot of shad and never got a bite. I then ran into Talala Creek and found some big shad balls and fished for about 30 minutes. I caught 3 fish, 2 dinks and 1-11 inch fish. The wind started getting up and I headed home. The lake is rising 6+ inches a day. I don't know if that was a factor but it was very different today than the last week and a half. The main lake was very clear for Oologah, but Talala Creek was very stained.

You did better than I would have. I can't catch a fish on Oologah when it gets above 3 feet or so and gets murky, which seems like almost normal anymore.

We made it out about 11 am yesterday and fished to 330pm. The wind was fairly strong out of the north:( so we decided to fish the south end. We started out in Skull hollow and a few dinks and a couple keepers. We then moved to Will Rogers cove and never got a bite:(. We finally bit the bullet and ran to Goose island. We caught several small fish (25-30) and kept 7 fish between 10-11inches. Fish caught using jigs in about 25-30 fow. Marked a lot of shad in Skull Hollow and at Goose but the bite was off. Lake is about 4.5 feet above and falling slowly. The fishing should pick up later this week. I won't get to go again until later in the week. Is no other crappie dot com member fishing Oologah? I get several responses and see where several people are viewing the posts but hardly any reports. I saw several boats fishing yesterday but didn't see any of our members. Good luck and I hope to give a report later in the week.

The girls and I took a drive yesterday to locate the Big Creek ramp. I have heard of decent fishing there during the spawn in the past, but never knew where the ramp was. We found the ramp close to 1 in the afternoon. It was blocked from the wind and looked fairly inviting. We drove back to Oologah and hooked up the boat and drove back to launch. It was more of an exploratory mission and we fished for about an hour with no bites. The breeze picked up a bit and it was just too chilly for the girls. Water temp in the creek was 42.9. The temp in the main river was 40. The main channel of Big Creek averaged about 18' and from looking at a map, seems to run for awhile. It looked like a good place for someone like me to do a night trip running way upstream to do some doodlesocking this spring. Even though no fish were caught, it looked promising for early spawn.

I managed to get out on Sat. also. fished most of the day and came back with 14 keepers. The water didn't look bad for as much rain as we've had. The wind was pretty rough, made it hard to stay anchored over the brush. All the fish we caught were in about 25 fow and were in or very close to the brush, seemed like you had to scraping the brush with your jig or you wouldn't get bit. We fished the South end of the lake also. Last week alot of the fish we caught had shad in their mouths...not so this week. Didn't seem like they were really feeding so you had to dangle the jig right in their face to get them to eat.

I'm hoping to get out there soon just to look around. I've not fished the lake since I was a kid. I've heard there is supposed to be some good fishing around winganon bridge, and since I don't have a boat, I'm always looking for a good place to go.

Soon it will be time for the "Bridge". Try the south east corner with a slip cork, especially with current. If no current and the south wind is blowing try the north east corner.

Winganon bridge has produced some spectacular stringers over the years, no doubt. The corners can be good, but I don't care to catch the sandies that tend to hang there. I usually come in about three poles down on either side, depending on the wind.
