Lake Eufaula archives

I can tell you that the females I have caught are full of eggs, some ready to spew at any moment, and others need some time to get ready. Am just seeing signs of rubs on their sides and some cuts from spawning activity but not much. I am sure in some areas on Eufaula like the very ends of creeks you can not access by boat the spawning crappie may be doin it or gettin to the end of doin it but not the spawning lake crappie. I fished the Porum Landing area and the water there is 8 degrees colder than the south end and the crappie there are not even close. Have even noticed this week that a few of the crappie I am catching have no color at all, solid white so that tells me they are still coming into the creeks or spawning areas from deep water. Just an observation and I am in no means an expert on the matter but I think if I would still be counting on the shallow bite.

Not saying I agree or disagree......... it just depends on where you fish. The spawn is like the wheat harvest, starts out way down south and moves north.

A large lake like Eufaula will have a spawn that last for weeks. The females are still loaded with eggs in this area and haven't spawned.

I sit in on one of Todd H's seminars once and he said that Crappie spawn in waves. He told the crowd that not all Crappie move onto the banks at one time and that the "Spawn" can actually take a month or more to finish up. I tend to agree as I've caught females in the middle of May that still had eggs in them. It's not uncommon to catch males on the banks as late as June on Eufaula.

I have a suspicion that there have been at least one wave that has already spawned. I'm betting that this full moon coming up will trigger more spawning as I'm still catching some females with eggs.

I believe that the reason more people aren't catching the big numbers of Crappie so far is because the lake is down so much this year and people are having a hard time finding them on the banks. I have a theory that many are spawning out in the brush that is in deeper water.

I believe this as well. Along with low levels comes less turbidity. Water on the north end has been much clearer than normal, probably a foot of visibility in places.

We ended up with 18 yesterday evening before the storm rolled in. Sporadic and no real pattern except they were holding on a little breakline. When it clouded up we switched to a Crappie Pro 3" Wasshopper in brown / pearl and the sows were hammerin this bait. I did have 3 that never hit it...just got heavy.
I agree OkieDon, there are alot of humps and flats off the banks this year, and old roadbeds for them to spawn on.
The almanac is predicting haevy winds and rain for late April / early May.

We're sure getting the heavy winds, LR. Gust up to 70 mph but no rain.
