3-26 Crowder/Rock Creek and 3-27 Gaines Creek
After leaving the CDC meeting, I went and hooked up the boat and put in at Crowder park. When I left the meeting, the wind was just a whisper. In the 20 minutes or so it took to go back to the Inn and get my boat and get down to Crowder, the wind had whipped up something fierce! But I was gonna go anyways! Put in about 2:30 and headed out.
Started off by going up Rock Creek. Went under the bridge to the Cover back to the right trying to get out of the wind. Found some 9 to 10 foot water but couldn't get a bite. Came back and fished the rock bluffs in front of the Crowder Point ramps and finally found a brush pile in 13ft of water that had some dinks on it.
By that time it was getting about Cold Thirty and my daughter and Wife decided they had had enough and wanted to go get some hot Catfish at Todd's. So we were done by 5 p.m. without anything other than a Catfish dinner to show for it.
Sunday morning we almost didn't go. i figured they would wimp out because the forecast said it wasn't going to get above 45. But my Wife insisted we try since were in the area and the only place I thought we could find protected water was Gaines Creek so I headed South. Put in Gaines about 11 and the wind wasn't bad at all. Fished up the creek focusing on the 10 to 12 ft water using blk/pnk and blk/chrt Beavertails.
Found a few fish on the clay banks if there was brush below. If it was clean, there were no fish to be had. We even found a few in 6 to 8 ft water. I tried the shallow wood, but with the 58 degree water, I didn't really think they'd be on the bank and after about 30 minutes with jig and cork, I stopped begging for a shallow bite ;)
Just as I though the fish were either starting to get active or I found a point where they were congregated, it started to rain. Just a little sprinkle at first, then a moderate shower. Not a problem as my Wife had one of my waterproof hunting jackets on and my Daughter had a waterproof ski coat and bibs on.
"Hey Hun, where's that rain suit I put int he boat Friday?" I asked
"Umm...I put it in the truck yesterday after we were finished fishing" she said
So I stayed until I was just a little more than damp and called it quits around 2:30 or so.
Ended the day with 18 keepers and we probably caught that many more dinks that we threw back.
I guess it wasn't too bad considering it was 41 degrees when we put in and 46 when we left.
Got to meet Jonboat on the water and he's a real nice guy. Even threw a few "places" to try our way. Unfortunately, it started raining before we got back down the creek to try them :(
All in all, a very enjoyable weekend.
BTW, if any of you people need a place to stay while fishing Eufaula, I highly recommend the Falls Inn B&B. Todd had recommended it to us earlier this month and my Wife booked two nights. It's a very nice place to stay plus she has a big parking lot with parking for boats and electrical outlets to plug your rig in if you need to.
But the thing that I loved was the hot Coffee in the morning and the homemade breakfast. She just asked what time we wanted to eat and had it ready the next morning! She really knows how to pamper guest. And at around 60 or 65 dollars per night, it's one heckuva value, especially considering you get a home cooked breakfast with it! I know we'll be back.
