Montana Crappie fly fisherman is back....Haven't fished yet. Taking water temps south of Bug Tussle and reading low 50's. Should make the bite good. Dirty water will warm up faster than clear. Only going to fly fish days that aren't windy. Have a new weed less fly now. Problem - job scheduled for 1st of March.
Gentlemen, I have had a fifth-wheel at the north end for a little over a year. I just can't seem to catch any crappie on that end. Could someone please help me a little? It looks like there is fish bite on the north end right now. Are you fishing closer to Gentry area or I-40, at least that would give me somewhere to start. I plan to come down the end of this week and check on the fifth-wheel and would like to fish a day or two. Any help would be appreciated.
Hello rd, The good bite is between I-40 and 150 bridges. The water color is a little bit cleaner than up around Gentry. Get in 12-16ft and fish 10-12ft with minnows or jigs. You can slow troll with or anchor up on brush if you like. Good colors for the northend are black/pink and brown/orange. Good luck! EB
Thanks EB,
That really help with a good starting point. I really appreciate it as I'm very new to the lake. Big E is right, lots of water to check out.
We fished (only 1 of us fished) Monday and caught 32 big ones (right at a pound to pound and half) to clean and lots of little fellas to toss back. A lady caght a 1.9 today right by us too. Today my Dad is down there and the fishing is slow and for him to say that it is slow.
Started at Onapa this morning and fished several brushpiles in 12' to 16' dow with only 1 dink inside the cove. Ran the banks North and found lots of piles and fished all. Fish were not biting early. Again only catching a few dinks. Loaded up at 9:30 and headed South. Unloaded at Crowder and headed up Rock Creek and the water got very muddy along the rip rap before going undr the bridge and again the fish had the lock jaw and no shad flipping or gulls working. Different than last week for sure. Ended up fishing at the mouth of Rock Creek and then north towards Crowder and caught em pretty good in the cleared water. Had to deal with strong south winds with a passing thunderstorm, then strong west winds with a passing thunderstorm, and then strong north winds with another storm. Had to even get in the truck for a few minutes til the lighting stopped. Then after all that the sun came out and it got right. Fish were hungrey. Water temp was 50.3 degrees when I left and had 23 very nice crappie..bait of choice today was blk/pink slab bandit and 1/16oz jig.....Ranger
well ranger, i cant say that onapa got any better as the day went. i fished there from about noon till 3:30 and never caught a fish? i hit several brush piles around the cove and then just went looking around for new areas to fish. found a few spots that look promising. guess i should have headed further south myself, but onapa is half the distance as crowder for me. i do enjoy fishing crowder area and i also venture to gains creek every once and a while as well..
good luck and happy fishing to you all...............
Glad to know I made the right decision bowman...as you its about 1/2 the distance.....it will only be gettin better as the days get longer...Ranger
I fished (3) different areas yesterday morning; Elm Point, Gaines Creek, and at the boat ramp in Bud's Point without any success. Kept thinking they would start biting as the storm approaced, but the lightning forced me to give up and go home. I keep my poncho handy in case of rain, but not much you can do to prevent being fried by a lightning bolt.
