Way to go. Nice mess of Crappies on a good looking fly. I fly fish for Trout below the Lake Tenkiller dam and have caught quite a few Crappies on Olive Woolly Buggers. I may need to try fishing for Crappies on Lake Tenkiller with a flyrod and see what happens.
Remember !!!! Crappies spawn in deeper water, when the water is clear. Maybe 6’ to 12’ deep. My technique is for muddy water where crappies spawn in shallow water. Haven’t figured out how to fish my fly deep. Tried to make it work on Boysen Reservoir last year in Wyoming, but method wouldn’t work. That’s why I came here “the muddy water”.
Well I could try your flyfishing technique in the backwater areas off the Arkansas River Navigation System. The water there is murky/muddy most of the year.
Keep your hook sharp in case "OL BIG" shows up
Sometimes when fishing the river, "OL BIG" shows up in the form of a nice sized Blue Cat, which is not a bad thing.
You may need to wade deep and fast.
Actually wading in the river is not a good thing. You never know when the Corp of Engineers is going to increase the flow of water from the dams. I fish from a boat, but I understand what your saying. I've hooked into several big fish that swam out to deep water and was never able to turn there heads.
Rick, I cant help but want to fly fish for crappie like you have, but check out the follow up post this evening of our crappie Doodlesocking @ Bugtussel. You could not have accomplished the same results in tight quarters jiggin with the flyrod. I'm a rodbuilder so please take this with a grain of salt. I'm going to try some openwater flyrodding here on Longtown for the black crappie that do spawn deeper in clearer water. Thanks for the pics I really like that fly!!!
Fished Rock Creek today mostly slow trolling jigs in 8 to 12fow. Managed 17 keepers and half of those came before 9:30am. We found some 63degree water west of highway 69 but the fish were still 6 to 8ft deep.(at least the ones we caught were). Water by the boat ramp was 56degrees. Did I mention that the wind was blowing?
Fish turn off this am . Only one fish. Moved away from he shallow water. I am not jigging with a fly rod. I am shooting 10’ to 15’ of line, even in the wind. I don't do jigs.

Slow day. Weather change. I have actually been catching crappie the last three days in about thigh deep to knee deep water and I'm a short fellow. My indicator was set at about 6". In my opinion it won't start again until Sunday or maybe late Sat. afternoon. The water temp. I measure today with a thermometer at @ 6" below the surface was 64 F.
They will be on the beds again tommorrow, you can bet on it!
Is it time to drive back down to Eufaula for crappie? What boat ramp do I need to go to? I need a safe place to fish since I am new to boating. I don't want to tear up the prop or worse. Thanks, all!
Fished my pond the last 2 days in a row, but only caught 4-6" bass.

The females are there they just may not be on the beds! They always stay close if you are fishig from the bank try to cast out a little ways in deeper water and fish the about half way down the water column. Example if it is 4ft fish 2ft etc, Minnows or jigs doesn't matter, if the wind inst blowing put a cork on and try to work the bait slowly back to you while working the cork. If the wind is blowing you don't have to move it as much. But believe me you will catch the females. They are in open water more than they are on the nest. Good fishing EB
Started out yesterday morning at Gentry Creek fishing the culverts. Caught a few dinks but nothing worth keeping. Gave up just as the storms arrived. Got home, at lunch and took a nap. Woke up and Wife said it was clearing and wanted to go fishing.
Buddy called shortly after and wanted to go also. I said how about some night fishing on Graves creek and everyone was for that.
Got to Graves about 5 O'Clock. Water at the ramp was muddy from the rain, but it hadn't made it all the way down the creek. We tied up near the mouth of the creek and immediately started catching some small males.
The water temp was 63 to 67. We were fishing inside bends wherever we could find brush in 10 to 15 of water. A lot of people were fishing the buck brush that extends out over the deeper water, but weren't catching anything. When I'd go over the same spots, I could see no brush below them. It seemed like the key was that there had to be brush on the bottom.
We were catching the fish from 2 to 6 feet over 10 to 15 fow.
The best bite came the last hour of the day and the first 30 minutes of dark (when you had to have a light to see) In that short amount of time we landed several big females.
The bite shut off about 30 minutes after dark. We stayed a little longer and didn't catch anything for a while so we called it quits. It also seemed like the current had picked up and the muddy water from the upper creek was finally making it's way down. This may have been the cause for them to stop biting.
We ended the night with 10 good sized Crappie up to 1.7 pounds.
We were back at 8 a.m. this morning. The entire creek was really muddy. We found some more submerged brush near where we fished the previous night.
Tried nearly every color jig but they preferred minnows, and Rosie's at that.
Fish were really slow and we tried several areas. None were solid producers and had to leave at 3 p.m. We took home 7 average sized fish with an exceptional one weighing 1.11 pounds. At about the same time this ole girl hit me, my buddy had one bite him that went 1.3 pounds.
Water temp was 60 when we started in the a.m. and had jumped to 71 near the mouth when we left. It was 63 back at the ramp. Can't understand why we weren't killing them on the banks...or anywhere else for that matter. Didn't see anyone else catching many either and a lot of people were leaving when we did.
Wife sit in the back of the boat and caught a few and snapped this photo on her phone.

Seems there has to be a wise acre in every bunch! :)
Great post!
Fished Crowder and Rock Creek Saturday. Result was 90 fish for the day.
Water temps were form 58-65. Nothing caught shallow. All fish pulled in were in 5-12' most close to brush or on ledges. Largest fish was 1.75 lb. - 14 3/4". Lot of 12 inch fish caught.
Fishing method was pushing jigs. Was fun maneuvering around all the boats. Then the afternoon wind made fishing fun.
Seems like everyone was out. Every ramp was packed.
Fished this am. zilch. Fished moved out, from where I had them cornered last week. Fishing deeper water away from the beds and nothing. Measure water temp. this am at 62˚F. dropped several degrees from Fridays measurement. People especially the kids having fun catching small ones around culverts. Thought today’s temperature was going to be in the 80’s – not so.
SD...you must really know where the fish are! I fished the Rock Creek/Crowded area yesterday (sat.)....and we only kept 12....I've never seen so many boats...places I have fished for years...I was never
able to get close to....and I only saw a handful of crappie being boated.
congrats on your phenomenal catch!

SD, quite a large catch! What size jigs?

3" beavertails and slab slayers various colors
Think Thumper did better than me Saturday down at Gaines Creek. Hopefully he'll pop in and drop a report. He was spider rigging also ;) No way i could have spider rigged at Crowder/Rock Creek with the crowds on the water Saturday.
what a weekend,.caught in excess of 200.pic of 2 guest from fort cobb.they were pleased with the trip.the 2 ice chest I sent them home with contained 150.which was all they wanted.they will be cleaning for hours.it was tough fishing with the current.all fish were caught in 5 fow.4 feet deep.on minnows and jigs.warmest I found was 62 deg. Im beat later.and good fishing to all.
We fished Saturday morning and early afternoon down by Gaines creek. Caught and cleaned 36 fish. We had 6-7 fish that were pushing 2 pounds.
We were catching fish from 5-10 feet deep around brush, and some just out in the open in a cove we were fishing in. Also fished some around the gaines creek bridge, but we didnt catch as many there.
There were some guys wading in the cove we were fishing in, and were having good luck in the buckbrush.
We fished yesterday evening from 3:30-Dark and had 40. Our biggest fish was 6 over 14 inches and 2 over 15 inches. We were spider-rigging jigs in 4-6 fow, fishing 3-4ft feet deep. We lost as many as we caught and a few more over 13 inches. There were people wading the buck brush and flippin corks and jigs and evryone was catching fish. The water temps were 64.8 degrees, perfect spawning temps. EB
Went wading on the North end of eufaula this morning, and caught 27. All were males in 2-3 fow. The bite was on from 7a-10a, but I fished until 1p. Their were some guys minnow fishing in deeper water catching some nice females. The biggest I had was 14", and the rest were 11-12". I lost a few bigger fish due to not getting a good hook set, but that's the way it goes. Some of the males were black and some were just starting to darken a bit. If I can get the pics upload from my blackberry I'll post.
NICE JOB gURU, I'M OFFICIALLY JEALOUS!
Water still at 64˚ F. I realize, on this web site; I was first tagged as “Guppy” then “Minnow”. However, I don’t have an over inflated ego and will answer to……Liar, Drunk or even Sheep F….er from Wyoming. Fished am and pm caught about 8 all males in the beds or real close “Wind was brutal”. Seeing big females caught around the culverts ≤ 2 lbs. - fish on the move, but slowly. With some stabilized weather everything should go big time. Helping out some socker doodles with fishing knots and lies. They are impressed with my fly fishing system and flies (getting more materials in from Baileys tomorrow). Actually hit one fish that took off like a permit in the muddy flats i.e. “it was a crappie”. But forgot to sharpen my hook and he/she escaped. Looks like Friday will be a prime day and hoping, I am not called back to work.
Well I head down to Eufaula yesterday to do some wading. Took about 2 hrs to finally find some fish. I was in the Bugtussel area. I ended up with only 11, but lost about 20. Was having a hard time getting a good hook set. The best bite for me came when the sun acyually came out. The bite was on during that time around 1:30-2:30.
Funny thing is, I see where others are in the same area, but yet I didn't see another soul wading at all. Guess I will have to try some new water in that area today. I will seek Lip out and move him over.
Hopefully I will get some pictures up of todays catch. Got to run got 1 1/4 hr drive ahead of me and getting a late start already.
A friend and I fished the Rock Creek area yesterday and caught 22. The largest was 13.75" the smallest 11". Sorry don't have scales, just a tape. Water was up some and temp at 61.
Just an update on the North end of Big E. Went early Saturday and knowing the lake would be overcrowded we just took it easy and anchored up at I-40. Battled thru big numbers of the 6" to 8" fish typical here but ended up taking home 56 decent (10"-13") fish. Last night I went jigging a creek off the bank from 5:30 - 7:00 and kept 9 of which 4 were females. Caught them in almost no water to 3' of water. All but one on, of course red-n-chartreuse Bobby Garland jigs
battled the wind yesterday and caught some nice slabs...all over a pound with the biggest just over 2 pounds and 15 inches long....was fishing minnows 3 to 6 feet and started catching as many catfish as crappie....woohoo...can you say fish fry!!!!
We went to the Gentry creek area today. We jig and corked one area and got out of the boat and waded in another area. The wind kept us pinned down to those two areas and we just kept moving from one to the other. We brought home 57 over 10 inches and half of them over 12. The males were in 6" of water to 2' of water and the females were in 2-6 fow. Our best color today was red/char, with several being caught on electric chicken and pearl/char. We had 2 identical females on at the same time, and they both were 14 inches long and weighed 1.97 lbs. Both were caught using a red/char jig set about 4' under a bobber. We also had 1.83 and 1.77 females and a 1.71 male. I caught a black nose crappie today also, only the 2nd one I have ever caught. Considering the wind I thought it was an excellent day of fishing.

On a side note I took a really good fisherman with me today. He is known as one of the better fisherman here on Oologah. He had never been on Eufaula lake until today. When we unloaded at Gentry creek he said I have never fished for crappie in this muddy of water. When we started wading and I told him where we going to fish he said no way are the crappie going to be that shallow. After missing the first 2 or 3 that bit him in 6" of water he was a believer and caught on quickly. He called several people on the way home and told them he couldn't believe how shallow and muddy the water was we were catching them. He is now hooked on the shallow doodlesocking at Eufaula and is skipping out on a turkey hunt to go with me again tomorrow.
I took several pictures and will post later. I am tired and going to bed, 0445 is going to come early in the morning.

LIP RIPPER and I took a friend of mine wade fishing for the first time today. He is hooked. He felt the thump! He is so impressed that I think we have him ready to get his first long pole. Leland you may need to get a slabstick equivalent ready for Ed. You all can read about it on Sunday in the Daily Oklahoman. It will be the featured story in the Outdoor Column with Ed Godfrey.
Where is a good area to wade fish if one doesnt have a boat?
