Thanks Fisher! That post was fun to read and the lake bottom contours looked like science fiction. Glad you were able to keep the streak alive.

Thanks Ranger. In Redge's defense, he only pointed me to one pile. Basically he showed me the standing timber area, which I could hardly see at all with the HB 798. I stumbled across 3 different areas that people (prob you) had brushed up looking for standing timber and while I was putting a pile out myself. Guess I was aiming for the right spot.

If you have the latest software update, on the HDS Gen 2 you press the power and light buttons at the same time and it saves it automatically to your internal memory as a PNG image. To export you go to your internal file and from there save it to a sd card that you have put in the unit. What I was doing before was trying to extract a singe pic from a multi media file that Lowrance uses to make the structure maps, which was completely unnecessary.

Thanks! I have not up dated to the very latest update as it was for sonic hub and I will never get one of those. However the screen shot function I will use. So I guess I better up date. So is PNG format similar to jpeg for viewing?

Redge, It is awesome! It is a game changer in my humble opinion! The only patented structure that can be precisely suspended from the bottom of a lake to an exact depth. Or you can sink it to the bottom. I have high expectations for this.

Fishers, I agree that Lowrance has a better down image than my old HB. But as you can see from these two examples on Killer I have no problem figuring out what is below the water surface. It surprises me your HB 798 isn't as strong as my HB 998.Name: S01179a.jpg

I dont know about the larger units, but the HB 798 has no dedicated crystal for down imaging. It combines the right and left side imaging to create a down image from what I understand. One of the problems my unit has is that it seems the two sides are out of sync. If I adjust for the right side the left side is whack, If I adjust the setting to suit the left, the right side is out of whack. This inconsistency started about 6 months after I bought the unit and as you can imagine it makes my downscan harder to work with. On top of that the 798 has half the wattage of a 998, I am not sure if that has any effect or not. I imagine it must otherwise why bump up the power for the larger more expensive unit? That HB 798 was a great starter unit, and at 700 $ it is still a great unit for up front, but after riding around in Tc's boat a couple of times I saw what I wanted.

I don't think you necessarily need a dedicated DI piezo to get good pics. However I do think it is preferable!

Did you check your TD for tilt? As far as the light on one side than the other? I am thinking the wattage has something to do with it.
