5-6 foot length of chain should be fine. You want to attach them to a good piece of rope about 25-30 feet long. Drop your chain overboard and adjust the speed of your boat by shortening or lengthening the rope.

Found some 1/2 inch dozier chain . what lengths should I make them . Figure to cut in 6 ft. sections and use "dummy links " to add more as needed . Should the add on pieces be shorter ? No experience with chains in wind .

Put knots in adjustment ropes every 10 feet to be able to evenly adjust each side...not my idea...someone's idea I had read.Does work good.
