I love my 4 stroke 25 HP. I've owned 2 Mercurys and a Nissan that I didn't like as much as my Tohatsu...even though they were basically outsourced Tohatsu's lol. It's also a sharp looking outboard, IMO.

Tohatsu has been making outboards longer than Yamaha. Since 2011, all Evinrudes 15 hp and under are made by them (I assume they still are). All Mercurys up to 50 HP are made by them and certain Nissan outboards as well.

The reason they are just now being seen in recreational markets is because they mostly served commercial outfits for a long time. Folks in South LA have known of them for decades.

The Arkansas duck hunting boys will pay a premium on certain 25 hp Tohatsu's (mine is one of them) because there's something you can do to the fuel delivery system, and some other things, on the cheap, and radically increase the horsepower. They have a 25 hp limit on their duck hunting wma' s and the Tohatsu's have quickly gained a legendary reputation for their toughness with that crowd on top of the modifications. They run wide open in cypress swamps, so they know.

My boat left the trailer when I went to swerve missing a wreck last spring. The outboard's lower unit never hit asphalt, but it did drag the grass on the side of the road. All that happened was a ruined prop. The outboard mechanic checked the tolerance on the shaft and it was OEM tolerance. I got another mechanic to check just in case, and it was still within OEM tolerance. It didn't move.

I chuckle every time a person passing by comments on my outboard and asks if it's one if those China made EBay outboards, and they've never heard of them. I quit trying to explain a long time ago.

You will not be disappointed with a Tohatsu. It is a reliable workhorse, and if I can help it, I'll never own another brand again.

SlaterSlinger is on point, lived in South LA for 10 years and my crawfishing/frogging partners was hard on em with no complaints. Reliable and dare say "bullet proof ",but that's only an opinion. Oh yeah, if you repower I'll give you a low ball offer for the hotzu

I suspect he may do as some of my friends and not use tie down straps on the rear of the boat. One of my friends said his was too heavy to come off. What he couldn't see that I saw following him was that every time he hit a bump his boat came up off the pads and bounced back down really hard, He hit a railroad track and it looked like the boat came up a foot before it slammed back down. That will eventually break the springs on the trailer and could very well damage the transom.
At least here in SC it is against the law to tow without having the "load" tied down. In an accident you could end up on the wrong end of the law if the boat isn't strapped down.

I went from a 2 stroke ported 40 merc with 60 carbs to a 4 stroke 40 Tohatsu with restricter plate pulled and absolutely love it. Lots of torque and only lost about 5 mph. I'm pushing a 1650 Xpress loaded for fishing 38 mph. On lighter boats I've seen them run upper 40's.

I think you better keep that Tohatsu. Extremely reliable motors.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.

    Default Tohatsu vs Mercury

Tohatsu made every Nissan that was ever built. Only difference in them was the decals and serial numbers. They were like Johnson/Evinrude back in the day. There is no longer a Nissan engine brand.

Tohatsu makes the Mercury from the 30hp and down. They also make the Evinrude 4 stroke from the 15hp down.

The Tohatsu 60-250 4 stroke engines are made by Honda. It’s a ToHonda. Tohatsu vs Mercury

BTW, I sell Tohatsu, Yamaha, and Suzuki if anyone ever needs an engine. Tohatsu vs Mercury
