Thread: Added water to my batteries.

The water being lighter is on top of the acid.......this is so the water evaporates instead of your acid......this is why its important to keep your batteries checked and too top them off with water. If you wait too long then your water could be gone and then you lose acid to evaporation. When this happens and you add water your battery will be weaker because of the acid loss. Several times of this will really give you a weak battery as well as shorten battery life.

Why not just use battery acid to refill?mThey used to sell it at Advanced auto a few years ago for around $6 bucks a bag,,, bag was around a pint or quart worth of acid,,,

I find myself rather using distilled water and a lot cheaper !!! anytime I get around battery acid I end up buying new shirt and new jeans due the fact unknown to me I got acid on everything !!! and you always find that out after doing the wash !!!!!

Acid evaporates quicker than water.....acid puts out caustic fumes.......the water acts as a seal. However while charging hard it will bubble and mix and you can smell it.....but after it settles back down it is like a seal. Yep.....we bought a lot of acid back in the day when we stored new batterys dry.....we would fill them with acid then put initial charge on them and top off with water.

Distilled water. Less than a dollar a gallon at any convenience store or Dollar Store.
