How many horsepower....

does a utility tractor need to pull a 6 or 7 foot tandem disk or a 6 foot bush hog? I have no experience with anything under 100 hp, and I need to get a food plot tractor for my little place on the Yalobusha. I have a 5 acre duck hole that needs to be broken and planted once a year, another 4 or 5 acres of food plots, and about 5 acres to be bush hogged a few times a year. How much tractor would be enough? Do I need mfwd or is two wheel drive enough?

We have a 2wd Kubota M4030SU, which is a 50 hp tractor and we have a wide variety of 6-7 ft attachments that it pulls just fine! Actually perfect for food plots and such. We were running water in the tires, but have drained them now and it still pulls fine.

A 2WD drive with 40-45HP will do the job, based on personal experience.

Thats the same tractor I have and it does good....I pull a 8 ft. disk and a 6 ft. bush hog. It also handles a three bottom plow good also.

Lookin at these two. Ford is 60 hp and 1000lbs heavier, but is 20 years old. Kubota is 2004 model 54 hp. It is lighter and smaller. Both are about the same price. I know nothing about Kubota but have heard good things about them. Which do you think? Hahaha... I used to fuss at Daddy for buying good used equipment. He never bought new. Now that he is gone and I am spending the money, used looks mighty fine!!!!

if you can afford the 4 wheel drive get it. I've had both and you wont regret getting the 4wd

The Kubota.....I bought mine new in 1990 and have had no problems. You really dont need four wheel drive unless your going to put a front end loader on it.

Kubota. I have a neighbor that can tear up a steel marble, but not his Kubota. I have two of them in the barn 20 + years old and still going strong. I learned my lesson about two wheel drives before I got these, both 4wd now.
I have a heavy 6 ft disk and the 35 hp 4wd will pull the blades off it.. It'll work in 2wd, just not as good and I've seen many times it was great to hit that 4wd lever.. You can get in some loose dirt and hit that 4wd and its like hitting a passing gear... Git it..
