What do I really need 55 or 80

Jim, I have Wareagle 754 VS stick steer with 55 hooked to two batteries and works fine for every application except pulling cranks. It will get the speed but run time is about 4 hrs. I pull with my big motor most of the time and steer with Terrova. If I was not going to use big motor I would definitely go with the 80 plenty of power and much longer run time especially on your boat.

In a pinch, you can use a drift socks when your batteries run down while pulling cranks. I've had to do it before

I have about the same setup you have. G3 17.5' Pro 170 with a 40 horse. My 12 V unit went out several years ago and bought a used TM, it is a 12/24 motor and I love it. I want a War Eagle stick steer with with a 12V up front and a 24v Engine Mount TM.

Go with 80 and be done with it.
