Thread: trolling motor question

I just recently bought a bow mount minn kota edge (hand controlled) trolling motor and fished most the summer with it and have had no problems. Today I installed a big foot on the motor and now the propellar turns at about 1/3 the speed. On 1 it actually hardly turns at all. But after a minute or so it takes off and runs fine. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Sounds like a bad connection. Did you hook it to positive or ground side? Should be wired on ground side. Also when mashing the button wiggle it around and see if it gets better. Over the years I have had a lot of trouble with the contact-or under the button, even when new.

are you wired 12 volt or 24 volt ?? and cray is correct its should be wired thru the negative side of the trolling motor that's if it is the brand Bigfoot!!! here is a picture of the instructions..

Ok. Guess I'm a gewber. Swapped batteries and its working fine.

Victor, the main reason for wiring switches like this through the Ground on DC is it reduces the ARCing created when you hit the on,off. Not something you would really notice but over time it tends to burn up the contact points in the button. Glad you got it figured out. When I used hand control motors I couldn't live without my foot buttons. Had one for each foot.
