They did a very thoughtful renovation in the mid 2000s. No longer are the benches that forever needed repair and painting that I remember from the 70s.. They were taken out and replaced with a terraced lawn. Blankets and camp chairs line up in rows. Very much a laid back attitude by the staff. Bring a cooler and dinner if you like, adult or other beverages. Also vendors there if you would rather purchase on site.
Tonight is the last of the 50 free concerts this year. They crank back up in the spring. The shell is one of the few things that I will come into Memphis for these days. Shame too, I grew up in midtown in the 70s and 80s. It was once a great city, now it is in a steady state of decline with a few bright spots.
