    Default No more bucket dragging

    Bought the boat a 1976 6hp evinrude for a kicker/trolling motor.
Found it on craigslist this morning. The guy wanted 275.00 for it I negotiated him down to 200.00. It has the original owners manual and comes with a brand new 3gal gas can and line plus a qt of quick silver. He said it spent 15 years on his grandads attic.

I called my outboard mechanic friend about it. He went put a compression gauge to it. Both cylinders are even at 125psi. It is now at his shop getting new points, plugs, and condenser.

With his fee for inspection and pickup plus new parts I will have a little less than 300.00 into it. Next will be a connection to the steering control and splice the gasline to feed it.

Just ruins the peace and quiet of being on the lake, JMO. Should work good though. I hate to listen to my 4 stroke run all day and it's whisper quiet.

I'm thinking this 6hp evinrude will be much quieter than my 60hp yamaha. I hate putting all those hours on a motor that would cost atleast a couple of thousand to replace. Plus gas savings should be pretty good.

Yeah, but everyone is going to hear that thing puttering and think you are Satdoc.

I would be surprised if it isn't louder than the Yamaha.

I had a early 70s like that. It is pretty quite. Burns about a gallon of gas every 3 weeks too. Easy start and smooth running, at least mine was. Probably won't last more than another 40 years though.
If it has been sitting that long, better replace the water pump impeller. I suspect the one in it is brittle and even if it pumps to start with it may fail pretty quick. Takes about 30 minutes to replace and pretty cheap too.

My mech says it's spitting water like a new one. Says to run it and watch before we replace. This was going to be a winter project but for 200.00 I couldn't pass. But yes that is good advice.

Seems like I am destined to pull these buckets around for awhile longer. The little 6hp looked good sitting on the transom. Try as we might just can't get around the control arm hitting it when the wheel is turned to the left.

Looks like it is time for a kicker bracket. Anyone have experiance with these. Fixed or adjistable ? The kicker wieghs 51# so I don't think I need the expense of Stainless. Looking at aluminum.

Then the issue of auxillary steering. Any ideas would be great. These buckets are going...some day. ds
