    I would sand the old finish off and then if the color is not dark enough apply some MinWax stain , let dry and then finish off with three coats of Min Wax rub on poly and rub lightly with fine steel wool between coats. I have re-finished a lot of gunstocks this way and they look just as good and hold up as well as using the more expensive high priced gun re-finishing products. You can get the MinWax products at Lowes.

    Marine Spar varnish is good also and you can get it in a spray can
