Initially the camps were done by polls, took forever, poll to eliminate lakes down to two, poll to vote on the final two and finally a poll to vote on the date. Besides that, things were ok with the polls. Then, we had a poll for a camp, everybody and their brother voted, Arkabutla won....unfortunately, only Ted, Canepole and Brenda, pstone and his wife, Chris and I were about the only ones there (if I left someone out sorry) The problem, folks voted and dictated our location that had no intention of coming to camp, so we stopped the polls and just picked a lake and date.
Then, it was decided to have a tourney combined with the camps with the lake master setting the lake and place. The problem, people traveling long distances to lakes they had never fished and no one would share any info about where to catch fish. So, we eliminated the tourney part. I personally think one person, the lake master for FJ's, setting the date and place works best and eliminates a lot of headaches from the process.
To me, anyway, camps are about socializing, meeting new c.com people, fishing with folks you wouldn't normally get to fish with, sharing information on locations and techniques to catch fish, and growing our numbers of active c.com members. Having said that, I hate the fact that our group would consider two camps on or near the same date. Would be tough or impossible to make both camps and would reduce the number of folks at each camp. We have had a camp at each of the big four multiple times, which means most of us have had them in our own backyard at times and have had to drive some distance for camps at other times. I might catch flack for this but I'm gonna say it anyway, it seems like some won't attend a camp if it's not in their own backyard and are willing to split the group for their convenience. What's next, an argument over who gets to use the fish fryer that the group pitched in to buy???
I would hope we could have one camp in the fall and any and all that have the means would attend. Hope to see a large turnout in the fall, wherever it may be, and i'll do my best to get time off work to be there and enjoy seeing everyone again.
Tight lines, ya bunch of gewbers!
