    Default Long liners

How much line would you have to put out to get say 20 ft down? With 1/8 oz jigs? I'm gonna try this out

    .....and speed

I use double 1/16th minnow style heads a lot with 6lbs mono line and can hit 15+' with 40'ish of line out at .7-.8 mph. Round heads will run a little shallower. I don't normally target fish much deeper than 15' for long line trolling unless the water is pretty clear. If you still need to get deeper, you can add a #7 or #5 split shot. If you need to run faster, add the split shot and more line out to stay deep. Lot of variables in long line trolling. Try to use all the same line, heads, baits, reels, etc when long line trolling to help be consistent across the spread to better guesstimate the bait running depths. You can always do your own research if you have a decent length area that is not real stumpy and has a range of depths. Run your selected gear at different lengths of line and speeds and weights and watch rod tips to see when they are hitting bottom. Adjust from there. Really hard to measure line length unless using line counter reels, which most long liners don't. If you have them from crank pulling, they could be used for long line trolling too.

When I'm going deep like 18 + I run 3 1/8 oz round heads and go down about 50-65 ft at .5-.6. Only longline when it's cold and do not do it on the Coe lakes.

Mark your line in 10' intervals if you are not using line counters.Count the marks as they go out!Speeding up and slowing down sometimes trigger strikes as does when you make a turn.Inside line slows while the other speeds up. This sometime triggers a strike. Just my 2 cents!I had to quit fishing with a buddy of mine cause all he wanted to do was either pull cranks or jigs all the time.I have got to jig pole fish sometime! We haven't fished together in years.Good luck with long lining. Is it ArkansasBowhunter that long lines all the time. He seems to be the expert on what works and don't!
