Use 6. That way if you ever do upgrade to a 24v there won't be an issue.

what size wire does express and others run from the back to the trolling motor. do they have a standard or does it depend on the customers needs or the t.m. that is gonna be used. reason i ask i am re-doing my set up and installing a pdv2 55. i called minnkota and the guy told be whatever size come out of the trolling motor, in my case 10 guage, they recommend a size larger coming from the battery. something about line drop, greek to me. since my travel is only about 6 feet he told be 10 gauge would do but use 8 if i could find it..could not find 8 gauge so i am using 10.

oh i will if i can get to where i can afford a 24v terrova. i will have such a short run i can replace this at very little cost. in fact the big part of my modification is going to two batteries side by side up front...

When it comes to wireing.....bigger is always better. Most boats use 8 guage but 6 guage would be even better.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

8 will work fine on shorter boats. I put 6 in the new 20'er. I have used 8 in every boat I've owned 18' and shorter without one single problem.

BTW, use a good quality wire. I prefer the oxygen free copper wire (limber like good booster cables) because the oxygen in the copper causes more resistance. The resistance eats up your amperage to the appliance (TM). I use stuff like the auto stereo type for this reason, plus it's more multi stranded.
