Some states, especially if the size of the estate is fairly small, you can file the probate documents yourself for a very small fee assuming you are the personal representative named in the will. I would call the probate court first and ask about their filing fees. If there is an amount due to the estate that is fairly small (last I looked for MS was around 30K) you may not need to go through probate and you can file a small estate affidavit to claim the money on behalf of the estate. You can look up the small estate statutes as they may have increased this amount (most states have). I deal with estates everyday, although I don't see many in MS.

The over 30k is the problem. Once it goes over 30 then I am required to use an attorney to do something very simple and straight forward.
