Default Any of you Chevy drivers ever changed out the key cylinder on

your truck ? I have a 2000 Silverado Z71 and I only have one key, I have bought blanks from ebay, Walmart and other stores, had them cut by Walmart, even took and had them cut with to old manual type key machine. I can not get a blank to work very smoothly at all and not consistent at all. I hate to be down to one key. I figure the reason the blanks are not working very well is because the original is worn and thus not a good cut when copying. Was thinking of just replacing the cylinder in the steering column if it wasnt to intense and to very much skill LOL. I have remote unlock/lock so not real worried about the doors

    thanks

Take it to a Chevy dealership and have them make you a spare.

I have read that I could get a key made by the VIN but was wandering if it would work since the key appears to be worn.

Yea I did that Rees, from what I can tell you have to pop over the covers around the steering column and then you can push in on a slot and the cylinder would slide right out, but was just wandering if anyone had done this, think I will do like Maj said and see if chevy dealer in Corinth can make me a key

    thanks

Any modern locksmith should be able to cut it that way, does yours have a chip in it?

File your new key untill it is worn looking like your old one and try that.

Larry, go to a GM dealer parts department with your registration. They can make you a key from the VIN. Don't even need your old key. They look up the info, enter it into the machine, squeeze the handle a few times and hand you your new key.
