In Sweetwater, TX., we have a large rattle snake round-up every year. At one time there was one man that purchased every snake
that was caught. He would have a large rattle snake feed (it does taste just like chicken....really) and he would cure the skins to cover
boots, hand bags and saddles. The skulls were picked cleaned after red ants would get all they wanted, then his 7 and 9 years old
kids would pull the fangs from the skulls and turn them over and place them next to the tops of the skulls and they would look just like
a steer head. He would place them in a mold and pour clear cast over them to make paper weights, belt buckles and ear rings. He had
a very lucretive business for many years. He sold most of his items to truck stops and tourists stops along the interstate highways.
Rattlesnakes are just like anything else, where there is a market, and a dollar to be made........they will be utilized. West Texas does
have more rattlesnakes than people, so there will never be a shortage. I have known several men that thought they were faster than
the strike......and they are missing fingers today.
