A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
Been doing it this way for years. The key to it is to pull the hook out of the foam handle from the bottom and not yank it. It's barely in the foam (not buried) so it's no big deal. If your two hooks are to far apart to do this then pull the bottom hook down under the reel and back up to interlock with the top hook and take out the slack. Both hooks are secure.

Going around the reel and joining hooks is superior in my mind because usually the weight rests against the fore grip with a Capps and Coleman rig and in transport does not bang against the rod itself chinking the graphite which can cause rod failure.
But I done tolt y'all to shut up.
