The trays can catch acid if you hit some rough waves and shake a little out....just saying.

The Onboard chargers most of us use today won't boil a battery. They read the charge level and go to a maintenance mode. The trays are to keep the batteries from moving around while traveling or while on the water. Acid will deteriorate a boat, so make sure the batteries are level so they won't leak.

i once just cut the flap on the end of my tray to make the battery sit flat........where the end sticks out an inch or so..........i dont think acid spill is a major problem, never had it happen. in my wareagle boat, the batteries sit flat with no trays.
The one in a thousand chance or one in a million whatever that it might happen.......wouldn't you want the safety net of the tray? no more than trays the right size costs....I believe I would have them. I had to buy bigger trays for my group 31 trolling batterys. Its sort of like insurance.....not really needed until something happens.

If you happen to overfill the batteries they will boil over. If they are in a metal boat the acid will eat holes in it. I know. I would get the right size trays.

Good points, guess I do different from most, take em out if they need servicing, charge, and replace the battrries CLEAN. Been running boats for years with the trolling batts under the front deck storage on carpet and have never had a problem, may one day tho.
