The rule I was taught was 1 ton for every 600 sq. feet. But a house has windows and doors where heat can enter. Cooking and moving around, add more heat. More people in the house, Kids, in and out all day. I figure 400 sq. feet per ton.
The bigger the house or 2 story, a split system, 2 units or more.
