The McCoys might could have stopped it but uncle Jim seemed to be the pot stirrer thru the whole show, and after he was killed it started to slow down.It was a passed down thing one of the McCoy women said killing Hattfield's was all she had ever known from a child and revenge was all that was in her.

The way I saw it was... Devil Anse Hatfield tried to reconcile with Randell McCoy when Randell came home from the war. More than once.
Now as far as Jim Vance goes he just hated yankees and killed all that he ran across. Which definitely fueled the fire. When he killed Nancy McCoy's pa.
And that crooked lawer on the McCoy's side fuel the fire too.
Too Bad Jim Vance didn't kill Bad Frank when he had the chance.
After seeing the movie and reading the life stories at the end. It was a real sad tail about how a small misunderstanding can escalate into something out of hand.
Great movie... Right up there with dances with wolves.

Just finished episode 1 last night. I was beginning to get a little discouraged given all of the violence and such, but now that it's become a romance I've been given new reason to hang on. I sure hope there's no more killin or cursin in episode 2

I think what started it was Randell McCOY'S not being able to forget or forgive Devil Ansie for leaving the war.The lawer was a major player in keeping it going it started with the timber deal, loved Devil showing up with the headstone. For the most part Devil seemed to be the one wanting to keep the peace,he tried to reconcile with Randell,he called out Jim when he killed Nancy's pa and most of the time told the other Hatfields not to kill. The GOD fearing man Randell McCOY could not turn the other cheak and lost the most 5 or 6 children a wife to a mental hospital and if the show was rite his on sanity and life. The hard man Devil Anise tried to make thing's rite at times but hardend his heart at other's lost the least and in the end was saved and lived in peace.

We could just let them have a duel like Hamilton and Burr. Of corse it would be in Sat's advantage with that power chair and all....LOL
