Thread: How long can I keep fish in a cooler of ice before I need to clean them ??

    There was some discussion at camp Saturday that they are easier to filet after a couple days on ice.

    Dont filet any that havent been on ice, 3 days easy, keeping the water drained is the key.

    Sounds like they know what they are talking about. Go ahead and put them in the freezer.

    I don't really know if this matters or not, but I keep my fish alive in live well untill I get home, then I put them in bottom of cooler and cover them with ice. I keep them on porch in shade with drain open.

    O, and by the way.... Always look at the fish's gills... If they have turned white or almost white, don't clean them, chuck em as they have spoiled. Otherwise if the gills are still a dark blood red, they're ok.
