Feelay, you can call one of the big 3 and place a fraud alert on your SS# for free. If you haven't already printed it out, you can get a copy of your credit report from each of the big 3. (I think the website is annualcreditreport.com). When you place the fraud alert, you have to acknowledge any processing for credit on your SS#. The company will see this when they run the credit and will not approve it until one of the big 3 sends back a conformation they have talked to you to confirm it's you applying. The alert stays active for 6 months or maybe a year. The other good thing it cuts down on is the credit offers you get in the mail. I have been placing fraud alert on my and my wifes SS for years. The only thing I've financed in about the last 6 years is a car....and it did work. The car place saw the alert. They held it up until they got the confirmation I was "me"...took a couple of hrs, but that system has worked for me.
