I ain't buying the Nutria bit, nor Beavers, nor Deer. No tracks at all around the tree and no chewed up bits at the base. Never heard of a disease that targets Sweet Gum either though. Sent the county agent some pics and an email. We'll see what he has to say about it.

Worst case scenario, I'll bring in a track hoe and push 'em all down, burn in place and replant it all in something.

I beg to differ holic. I had lunch with Sat today and that makes me almost an expert on thus subject.

I'm gonna say it was beavers that were as old as Sat. That's why they ain't no teef marks on the tree.

had this happen to a lot of my trees during the tornado last year. The trees were bent so far over in the wind that the bark busted off the trunks. A year later, I still have trees blowing down from the damage done by the tornado. Good luck, W.B. It's one heck of a job taking them down.

Lightnen was my first thought be didn't show pictures of where the lightning ran down the tree. There has to be a sign of where it jumped from tree to tree.

if the bark debris is blown out in a full or maybe partial circle around a tree, look to see if there is a corkscrew like split from top to bottom. had a pine tree hit by lightning years ago when I lived in FL, there was a spiral/corkscrew type split in the tree top to bottom with bark blown out in full circle. any recent lightning storms at your house??
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
