I've either read or heard Kent Driscoll say that with a 2oz weight that the crank will run at half the depth of the length of line out, it sounds like your results were in line with that. Thats what I go by when I push them. I think the most important thing is being able to repeat what you did when you catch a fish. If you have good electronics and know how to use them you may be able to get on them faster by knowing exactly how deep your baits are running but I'm not at that level, I use trial and error until I see a pattern and then I try to repeat it on all my poles.
I've heard it was line out divided by 2 + 1 or 2. 30'~2=15+1=16 or +2=17.
