Try this ES. Get pops to run the boat down the lake while you're layin on the back deck. At wide open throttle stick yo arm in the water as deep as you can reach. Feel the amount of force it puts on yo arm. Then pull yo arm up about an inch at a time and see if the resistance slowly goes away. It's the same principle as yo motor.

You may wanna consider installin a whale tail on it. I had to on mine. It will keep the prop from blowin out and keep the boat on plane. Ifn you do get one, get the aluminum one, not the thick plastic one.

He is fixin to get a foot up his a$$. It might pee idoling-a-long---but at WOT. That's wide open throttle, by the time you look back to see if its pissing water it may be to late,
it's take's maybe 15 seconds to cook the engine!!! Again what do I know???
If you going to jack with the jackplate install a water pressure gauge!!!!!!!!
    P.S.
Is the engine hitting on all cylinders, if it's not, it might run good at top end but it will be hard to get on a plane.

Still best to.... Check with a boat shop or prop shop and see if they do not agree
    Hey G , less pitch put's more load on the engine,more load=less RPM's.

As long as the fins on the side of the foot above the prop aren't above the bottom of the boat he shouldnt have a prob. Pressure gauge is a good idea for sure but a boat not getting on plane and lugging the whole time will overheat as well. Sounds like it's under powered.
None of us seeing it first hand aint helping either.
    Good luck ES.

looked this up this AM. not sure if it's yours. If it is your RPM's at WOT are 4750-5250...too much prop.
