    The 24v 70lb will last longer. The 24v system, plus a stronger motor means the system would be working at a smaller percentage of total output. It would be just like you, if you worked at 80% of your total output
    you would be done in two hours or you could do 50% all day long. The 55lb would have to work at a higher level of total output. Like Wannabe said, you need a slide ruler or a really good Cow-cu-later.

    The new Minn Kota trolling motors have a maximiser built in the motor. This makes your motor work the same but uses less battery power which gives you more fishing time. I didn't know anyone still used a 12V TM.

    Yes theres still a few of us out there than uses a 12v. Ihave an aluminum boat and it works pretty good unless the wind is high. Thanks for the information guys.

    Ricky brought up an interesting angle and one I didn't think about.

    Comparing the 70 and 55 lb, both with 2 batts, one 12V and one 24V. If you were to set both to run the same speed - let's pick 1.0 mph, then yeah, the 24V would last much longer than the 12V for the reason he was stating - the 24V would be operating at 40% capacity compared to say 60% capacity for the 12V.

    I was thinking along the lines of say spider rigging with either motor. Bump it here, bump it there all low speed or maybe a steady speed of .2 to .4 mph. Under that set of circumstances, they would probably perform equally as far as longevity, with the edge going to the 24V.

    Anyway Coach, the short answer is the 70# 24V would be better, but laying in another battery on your 12V set up is going to give you basically twice the run time you have now. One caveat is say if your current battery is old and weak, when you lay in your new one, the old one is going to draw current from the new one. They will fight to equalize themselves, which in turn will rob you of some troll time and decrease how long the two batteries will last in terms of months or maybe a year. If your current battery is relatively new - say a year or less and in good shape, I wouldn't worry about it. But if it's really old and on it's last legs, you'd be better off to bite the bullet and get 2 new ones rather than run the risk of killing a new one and having to replace both next year.
