TLOW OF HERNANDO
uh, I don't mess with electricity....... I have lots of opinions on other stuff tho! These folks will chime in really soon or you could go back over older threads and do a search.
OK, now follow along here kids. I'm gonna give you a free lesson in cheating "Big Charger" out of some $.
There's 2 ways to charge a 24V system plus your crank battery with a 2 bank charger.
#1) Go to the hardware store and buy an extension cord ends. One male and 2 female. Run a short piece of wire from your crank + & - and terminate in one of the female ends. Do the same with one of the trollers. Now, cut one set of leads on one of you banks and terminate it in the male end. Now you can come home, charge the trollers first, then switch one bank to the cranker to bring it back up. Once it's full, switch it back to the trolling batt for maintenance purposes. Word of caution. Do not plug the charger in while the splice is seperated. Most chargers sense voltage before putting out amps, but some dont. Best not to take the chance.
#2) Run one set of leads to the cranker. With the other set of leads, put it on one the empty positive and the empty negative of the trolling bank wired for 24V. Before you do, test those posts with a meter and make sure you get 12V. The jumper between the batteries will distribute the charge between the two batteries. The hitch is, you're spreading your amps across 2 batts. If you've got a low amp charger..say 5 or 10 amps, it's going to take a long, long time to bring them back to 100%. If you're discharging them deeply - say like trolling cranks, it's liable to take 16 to 20 hours.
I've done both, but prefer to switch the leads manually like in #1 so the batts can be brought back up as fast as possible. Chances are, the crank battery just needs an hour or so to top it off.
