I mashed the button and it seemed like the dinger just got louder.

Did you ever thank to keep pushing it ? I don't own a chevy but mine turns off like that maybe it is like a volume button keep pushing it till it turns down or off just my $.02 I drive a ford push the button and it's off got a little light that says so.

My Ford is the same way.....

As long as the boat ain't behind me I can turn it off. I think. I'll hook the boat up again this addernoon and try it again.
