Some of ya'll know I live on the outskirts of the city. Technically, I'm in the city limits, but it feels more like just on the other side. Well, there's a 6 acre lot that is fallow before you get to my house when you turn off the highway. So, I'm heading home yesterday and I saw 2 unfamiliar dogs out in that field playing with something. I was thinking they were getting after one of Vic's Guinea Hens, but as I drove past, I decided they had a deer carcass they were working on. Just as I passed, I saw the deer get up and challenge them. Have seen this more than once, so I sort of knew what to expect.
Left my truck and decided to get the dogs off of her and see what kind of shape she was in. She was exhausted of course and let me walk right up on her. Couldn't see a gunshot wound, but the dogs had opened her front shoulder up a bit, but appeared to be only a flesh wound. I scattered the dogs and made her get up. She lit accross the field fairly well, but she did so on 3 legs and the dogs turned and took her down again. When I got further accross the field, the dogs scattered for good again and the deer bailed off in the creek and layed down on the ice and just layed down there on top of the ice.
If I'd have had a pistol with me, I'd have put all 3 of 'em down. Good thing I didn't though since I"m in the city limits and there's one of them tree huggin, high colonic lovin', herbal tea drinkin, In defense of animals type ladies down the street. In the end, I left the deer where she layed to hopefully recover and then chased the dogs off the street.
Kind of sitting here feeling guilty and wondering if I should have put that deer down now. What do ya'll think? Would you have put it down? I've seen bucks chasing does before that lost the leg the year before so I know they can get by. Just a pitiful site to see that deer panting and torn up like that.
Wannabe...
