Default Dangdest thing on the way home from work yesterday.

Some of ya'll know I live on the outskirts of the city. Technically, I'm in the city limits, but it feels more like just on the other side. Well, there's a 6 acre lot that is fallow before you get to my house when you turn off the highway. So, I'm heading home yesterday and I saw 2 unfamiliar dogs out in that field playing with something. I was thinking they were getting after one of Vic's Guinea Hens, but as I drove past, I decided they had a deer carcass they were working on. Just as I passed, I saw the deer get up and challenge them. Have seen this more than once, so I sort of knew what to expect.

Left my truck and decided to get the dogs off of her and see what kind of shape she was in. She was exhausted of course and let me walk right up on her. Couldn't see a gunshot wound, but the dogs had opened her front shoulder up a bit, but appeared to be only a flesh wound. I scattered the dogs and made her get up. She lit accross the field fairly well, but she did so on 3 legs and the dogs turned and took her down again. When I got further accross the field, the dogs scattered for good again and the deer bailed off in the creek and layed down on the ice and just layed down there on top of the ice.

If I'd have had a pistol with me, I'd have put all 3 of 'em down. Good thing I didn't though since I"m in the city limits and there's one of them tree huggin, high colonic lovin', herbal tea drinkin, In defense of animals type ladies down the street. In the end, I left the deer where she layed to hopefully recover and then chased the dogs off the street.

Kind of sitting here feeling guilty and wondering if I should have put that deer down now. What do ya'll think? Would you have put it down? I've seen bucks chasing does before that lost the leg the year before so I know they can get by. Just a pitiful site to see that deer panting and torn up like that.

I would have had to put her down. But that's easy to say not knowing about the lady down the street.

man o man, now that is something I would not want to have to deal with, but I think I would have done the same thing, if it was a flesh wound, it should heal and she was just probably tired from fighting and running from the dogs. I vote you done the right thing but that is just my opinion and you know everyone has got one just like they got ***ho*** :D:D:D

    Unhappy

I would have put her down, but on the the other hand would that be legal? If the season is still open and its a legal kill take care of it.Hate to see any animal suffer.

from looking at the wound I think you did ok, looks like it should heal. The only concern is the dogs coming back for her.

That's what bothers me maachu. That one pic makes it look like a flesh wound and the leg is not askew, which made me think it was just exhausted, but when she ran, she pulled it up and didn't use it making me think it may be broken. I dunno. Just bothers me some.

With that said, some of you old guys that fish the FJs next year need to be real careful not to break your leg in such a fashion thas it is easily determinable just from looking while I'm around.

Tommy, that was my 1st inclination, but then I thought about that woman down the street who's in with IDA. Been more than one in town due to folks like her to get into trouble and on something like that, it's a felony, which would mean I'd lose my right to own guns. Pitiful what that org and folks like 'em have done to this country.

I would have left the deer alone and shot the dogs, and swore up and down the pack was on attack towards me and it was self defense.

bet the deer will be fine .

You should have carried her to Vic and let him heal her.
