    Default Thursdays Battery lesson

OK, here's what all I found out last night. Yes, I did get the batteries hooked up the right way and replaced the fuse. When I took the old batteries out, I taped the ones together that went to each post and now have them back where they were. Works like a charm and I now am back to having a true 12/24 V system. I can actually tell the difference when I change it over from 12 to 24 and mash the button. TM Prop spins like heck now on 24V. While they were out, I looked at the charger. You can only see it when you have the batteries out cause it's way back up under the console and you just can't see it at all. Looking at it, It's a BassPro Brand and it says it's a 3 bank so that's good. I ASSUME it's hooked up to the Cranking battery but not sure. Guess I need to find a way to find out for 100% sure and if it's not, run some wires and make it hook to the cranking battery. When I first got the boat, I plugged in the Charger to the house and it was charging fine until I had one of my TM batts go out, then it just wouldn't charge anymore. Since it quit charging early this year, I haven't had much need for a TM cause of pulling cranks and have only been charging it with the portable charger since it did work. Time to get things right now I recon since I'll be using the TM out spider rigging or jigging stumps or Bridge pilings.

Your charger may be bad....it might have burn't out when your TM batt went out way back....it may have been trying to charge it and it wouldn't charge and the OB charger couldn't cut off and burn't up. I reccommend you trace all your wires out to be sure they are ok and clean up all of your connections...then if the OB charger does not work...its toast , go get a new one.

Tracing out the charger wiring shouldn't be a problem. If it's 3 bank, there should be a ground and positive wire for each bank running to each battery.

May have missed something yesterday...were you saying your cranking battery is not holding up? If so, do you have any issues with your tachometer jumping around or not working properly?

O/B chargers have a voltage detection system in them that checks for minimum voltage before they will kick on. So, if you have a bad batt or one completely dead, the system will not attempt to charge it. From where it is mounted, can you see the indicator lights on the charger? If not, you need to move it or get an extendable mirror so you can see them or it's going to bite you in the green carp without the b right when you really don't need to be bit.

OB chargers can attempt to charge a bad battery...if a battery has a bad cell it can still show voltage and it will not charge right or none at all. He should trace and inspect his wires because he could have one cut or maybe two have got together and wore through the insulation and are touching each other.

It is possible, but if you have a truly bad battery and it detects 0 voltage, most quality chargers will not attempt a charge. My MK portable, for example, will not. Had a lawn mower batt that sat till -0- voltage this year. Had to give it a slight jump, then the charger would kick on and charged it up.

G....I think we just need to ride down there and give this boat a good going over before he hurts himself and we have to listen to him whine about it for months on end.

The charger should have 3 lights- one for each bank. They are red then they will turn green when charged. If the cranking battery is wired, you should have a light on.

My Cranking Battery is on it's last leg to. I can fully charge it with the portable and then put the charger on it a few days later and it's down to 80%
