Most of the earlier military vehicles, tanks, personnel carriers and etc had stick steering in them even if some had two sticks--but same principle. I have a large 18ft. Polar Kraft and I traded a nice 16ft. Crestliner with a 40hp Johnson for this big rig and a 90HP Mecury. Yup it is great for speed and takes the water better than a 16ft. but it uses more gas and takes longer to turn and getting into tight spots. I loved the Crestliner but moving around in the boat was a problem. Seems in my old age I lose my balance a lot and my son likes to move aroud a lot.
I bought me a stick-steer for the main reason I do not have to move from the console to the front anymore to operate the trolling motor or to walk around in a boat.
The rough water--When it comes over the front of any boat--I have no business on the water. My Crestline was a heavy boat and you would get wet in it also if in a rough lake. Myself I fish the rivers and oxbows---The big lake I never mess with it.
Hitting something and being thrown out the front end???---When I am crappie fishing I am in the brush and stumps--I expect to hit stumps and I never miss one.---Fish Millwood a while and it will teach you about speed after you hit a stump or lose a outboard or sank a boat---I hit them many times in a day---Outboards and lifes have been lost in that lake due to speed and tree stumps.
I move around a little more than an idle speed that is why I bought the stick-steer and the 30hp Mercury--Now maybe my son will not tempt me to throw him out of the boat when I almost fall overboard or fall----Age has its limitations and youth is worried about nothing---a fall overboard is fun to them and a good swim--us seniors---well you know.
