Thank you for your comments regarding George P. Cossar State Park. The decision
to close George P. Cossar State Park was very difficult.

Our decision was based on several factors including a shortage of funds. Since
Fiscal Year 2008, the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) has
sustained a 31% reduction in funding from the Legislative General Fund
Appropriation as well as a 9.5% cut as part of Governor Barbours FY 2010 budget
reductions, and a 6% reduction in Privilege Fees.

The Parks Division of MDWFP has streamlined its operational costs by reducing
expenditures and has suspended hiring of non-essential personnel. Even with
these actions, MDWFP continues to face budgetary challenges regarding loss of
revenue, with Cossar State Park experiencing the largest sustained deficit.

At this time, MDWFP is negotiating to delay the closure date and/or keep the
park open for camping. Unfortunately, the restaurant and swimming pool will
remain closed. A final outcome is expected within the next two weeks.

Thank you again for your comments.

Maybe this is the problem, why would anyone hire non-essential personnel to begin with?

There was a discussion on the Paul Gallo program this morning about the closing of Cossar. A guy from the Corps and State Rep Warner McBride. I have to tell you, I was really disappointed in the lack of knowledge Rep McBride had about Cossar or the park system in general. I had to call to let him know too. If any of you get the chance, make it a point to visit the Capitol when the legislature is in session. Go to a committee meeting or two and sit in on floor business in both the House and Senate, it will open your eyes. A lot of these guys have got to go.

Heard the same program Maj and had the same dissapointment in the general understanding of the parks and COE interplay. Heck even Gallo didn't seem to know spit and the boy is a fisherman himself.
