Bigger will always be a the punch bowl with the terd in it half empty kind of guy.

I'd have to cut the shop boys a bit of slack. The only real way to check bearings is to pull the wheel and hub assembly. Past that, you can jack it and try to shake the hub checking for play, but even that won't really give you much of a heads up. When they go, they go. I'm guessing either they jacked it and it was OK, or they took their foot and shook it while on the ground. That would have told them whether it was gonna go out before you got home, but wouldn't be much of a guaranty for the return trip. It's the nature of the beast.

    Thus endeth the lectureth.

99 percent of the time if you jack one up and shake the wheel if there is no slack and the wheel turns and spins smoothly you are ok. I have had some with a little slack whjen shaking the wheel and have adjusted the nut properly taking the slack out and the got a good feel on rolling the wheel and have been ok. If you do this and the wheel does not feel smooth when turning it...you have got some bad bearings. I carry in my truck a complete brand new hub with bearings races and seals and packed with grease. I also keep a complete set of wheel bearings, races, and seals ( for both sides), and a tube of grease and tools to replace in my truck. Also carry tire plugs and plug tools and a portable 12 volt DC air compressor, Plus I have a spare tire and wheel for the boat trailer. I don't like having to leave my boat on the side of the road to go hunt parts or get flats fixed etc.

G3, you sir, are a wise, wise man. Add to that list a Jack that you have tested to work on your trailer, Jack stands, wheel chocks, and a 4 way and I'll nominate you for the Wannabe seal of approval award,

I also carry a spare winch strap as well as a spare winch , and a set of spare transom tie downs that a friend gave me. Alway keep some extra boat plugs with you also. I saved the day for a guy one afternoon....he was getting his boat ready to launch and he did not have a plug......his BP was going up, LOL. I walked over and gave him one. I also keep a small set of jumper cables onboard the boat. I could go on and on....but I try to be prepared.

Nice folks to take care of it that quick

    Default Really not sure

It was laying on the table when I got home and I was so worried about what I'd find in the box, I didn't look that close. I should have a new rod either tomorrow or Friday though
