Thread: Motor question

Well, it depends. I wouldn't worry about it on my relatively low performance boat, but if You've got say an 18 glass or larger capable of say 50 mph or more, I might be concerned. Anything out of kilter on a LU when you're skint back is not a good thing and a potential hazzard.

That said, the purpose of the cav plate, especially right there is to make sure the prop has water to bite when coming to plane. Then again, that rough area at full tilt and boogie is a hook waiting to happen.

The area that is broke is say you are squatted down tryin to figure out what's got your drain plug hole stopped up and some dd decides to trim the motor down. This area will mash into the back of your head and press your nose into the hole. Ya know where I'm satin now? It's a lip that was bout 1 1/2" that runs all way round the front of motor and onthe same plane as cavitation plate. 115 yamaha will run bout 46.7 mph. 18' alum.

Yeah, I saw where you said you had an H51. Not exactly a speed demon, but you've got max HP on it and cutting a pretty good spray if you giving it all she's got. Have you noticed any and I mean ANY new squirreliness at WOT? The trouble is you've got a hull that's not got the best bite on the water combined with an engineered running surface that's been de-engineered. Now throw in some WOT sloppy water and you might just get an odd bite on the motor that very well could hook your boat and spin you around at speed. Bad mojo.

All that said, I don't see it as a critical defect for you, assuming you've noticed no ill effects. If it were me and I couldn't tell the differnce, I'd prolly leave it alone. I'm guessing a 115 LU housing is gonna set you back $400 plus labor for the case swap. Kind of pricey and that's a total guess.

Bring pics of your nose in the drain hole with the motor mashing your head and I just might buy lunch next week.
