Great fun allright, but just had a flashback of how painful it was after 3 days having a 8 pound or so Sharpes carbine hanging off a strap on your shoulder.
Gun scabbards aren’t period correct for that era, so it just hangs off a strap/swivel from the saddle ring. If you ride a Mcclellan saddle there is a thimble that the barrel rides in, but I don’t think they do much for taking weight off, just keeps it from flopping about. I rode a correct, but civilian style Hope saddle, so I had to hold carbine in one hand when things got bouncy. And with all those horses milling around, the big hammer spur is just the right height to get smashed into side of your knee.
