Default In my search for a bamboo spinning rod

I came across a nice vintage 1950's -60's glass rod with a Tennessee handle. It is supposed to be a Garcia Mitchell Conolon. It has became the home for the little Mitchell 308. You can flat send a bait with it. Name: 20220210_174907.jpg

The 3 down bottom are not mine. Just a photo I had found of one like the rod I have in the tailgate photo.

Bamboo can be a very tough find at a price and condition that makes them worthwhile. It takes that magic flea market find.

I have come to realize that. Bamboo Flyrods, and heavier offshore Bamboo rods seem somewhat plentiful in my area. Ultralight Bamboo spinning rods are a whole different story. Pherhaps they did not withstand the test of time in my area as other materials have.

I have been looking at some of the post war Japanese stuff. They imported a lot of boxed fly/ spinning rods. The handle could be turned around. Pretty neat concept. Prices are all over the place on them

I have seen some beautiful old bamboo boat/ trolling rods. Funny how they ended up here many miles from any seawater. Yet in the land of mountains and trout streams bamboo rods of that variety seem to be scarce. Someday I will happen upon one to go chase bream with. Even considered building my own from scratch. It does seem to be a very laborious task. Maybe one day I will put my hand to such an endeavor

It is the pride in the craftsmanship of the old timers, and the sheer beauty of the fly rods themselves. Honestly I would be afraid to fish them, and I’m easy on my equipment. The top end rods today are better and more consistent, but those beautiful slow and medium actions (which I love in a fly rod) have got to be a joy to fish with.
