I ended up tipping the guide 20%. He is a small time operation...just him and his boat. But he was a total professional. Fishing conditions were not good, but he worked really hard to put us on fish...some snook and a couple of tarpon. He was really appreciative and seemed surprised that I tipped him since the fishing wasn't great. Since the fishing wasn't too good on the second day, he took us around and showed us the sights. My wife enjoyed that a lot. The poor fishing wasn't his fault. Nobody was catching much. A cold front with a strong north wind moved into the area just as we arrived in Florida. But he still made it into a memorable trip.
Sounds like he earned every penny.
