Reminds me of a friend of mine who discovered one of these nests in the dead of wintertime and decided he was going to cut the nest down and place it as a decoration in his living room next to his collection of deer heads and fish trophies. Well he successfully cut the nest down and inspected it very carefully... and when he saw no hornets at all over about an hours time while the nest was outside... he came to the conclusion that the nest had surely been abandoned. He then proceeded to hang the nest in his living room... and after marveling at his new found trophy for only a few minutes... he and his wife left to go about whatever their plans were for that evening. When they came home later and entered their home... to their total surprise... the nest had warmed up and the hornets apparently came out of their dormant state. They said they saw... not hundreds... but closer to a thousand paper hornets swarming in their living room and aggressively attacking everything in sight that moved.

Waited til dark and temp was down to 49, so Paul went out and sprayed a whole can of wasp & hornet spray into the nest. They were trying to come out but they weren't making it far. Gonna douse it again earlier in the morning when it's even cooler.

How Rude to attack these poor dudes. There only doing what nature wants them to do. Hit one on the Kubota with the cab last year. Let me tell you it was not fun watching these fools trying to find a way in the cab with me. I know they did not give up the chase for a mile. But then they turned back and I was glad. As I had to get off to unlock the gate and was not liking that ideal with them around.
Cousin of mine found one around 1979 and cut it down put it in his trunk of his car. Few days later it had gotten above freezing and he could hear this sound. Dumb butt opened the trunk and got stung 20+ times. But he never got one again without spraying them down and leaving it outside for a few days.

Its Enid time in 7 days........................................
