I don't really need the books. I can figure things out pretty quickly and off the top of my head and it usually does the job first go around. I'm not a dummy. I have a lot of that stuff already. Specially the knives.

I actually got this idea after watching a couple episodes of Surviorman and Surviorman and Son.

Surprised no one mentioned a couple rolls of duct tape. It literally has 1,001+ uses. Consider that while going to the Moon every single ounce of weight was critical but NASA decided to take TWO rolls of it on every Apollo moon mission, and on Apollo 13, it LITERALLY saved the crewmember`s lives...

Duct tape is handy. That and electrical tape. Mythbusters made a sail boat out of duct tape once.

I don't think anyone is trying to say you are a dummy. Even the smartest person can forget things in an emergency. I would say get the boy scout manual. Wealth of info. Also get on line and look for "prepper meetups" in your area. While some people on the prepper shows and some you will meet at these meetups may apear to be extreme preppers you can still pickup info from them. Look up BOB's "Bug Out Bags" There is usually a list of what people put in theirs and you can pick an choose according to your needs. Some of what I have are led lights, several knives, handi wipes (you can find these by the check out at wal-mart). I would also say you need to have one if not two pistols of different cal. If you happen to be one of these anti gun people get over it. The people without guns are going to be the first ones to fall in a real disaster. I would also include some fishing line and hooks if you haven't already put them in there. You can always PM me if your interested in anything I have mentioned.

being a city girl, I'd be more inclined to create a bug out bag. you won't survive in the city if the shtf. start gathering your needs to be stored at someone's home outside the city

water proof matches or a combo of magneisum and flint fire starter tool with a good hunting knife. fishing line always come in handy and some hooks. so does small pocket fist aid kits... space blanket one of those aluminum foil ones. also what about a 100 foot of para cord braided up like in a survival bracelet necklace etc.. etc ... to make it small and compact also a book on small animal snares and maybe a book on survival in the wild? like on what type of fungus and berries etc you can eat threw out the world.... some kind of water purification system either a straw filter or a dunk able water bottle remember it took several days to get water to the people of that gulf coat hurricane when those levy broke you need food and water and shelter/ warmth to survive...

there are ways of getting water out of the desert etc that is ware a survival book would come in handy like: cactus is mostly water to get the water from the cactus you got to remove the thorns and skin of the cactus to get to the tender meaty part of the cactus. which has the most water in it. there are little tricks like that all over the web but when the stuff hit the fan there is no internet...then what you going to do?

don't forget a compass or how to read stars and sun position for north and south bearings if no gps is available

Water is a big key to survival, so water purification tabs and some collapsible cups although I personally have 1 gallon zip loc bags packaged instead.
Shelter. I have 4 space blankets as well as a heavier duty disposable poncho. Getting drenched followed by a 20 - 30 degree temp drop is not pleasant.
2 100 foot rolls or paracord
A big KA Bar survival knife, a small hatchet and a machete.
A magnesium firestarter and striker I also have a couple forever matches and a small bottle of lighter fluid for refilling
Firestarter I make mine from dryer lint and wax but you can buy premade.
Needles and thread ,my thread is a spool of braid fishing line, small pack of #6 Hooks
dozen packs of alcohol prep pads (can double as a fire starter sometimes)
    Small pack of sulfa powder
    pack of benadryl
Bar of soap mostly for wound cleaning
a couple dozen sugar packs and salt packs real sugar here, can be used as a wound dressing, but is a great pick me up if you need some quick energy.
Survival manual unless you spent time reading and studying but its still nice to have
Guide to edible plants and berries for your geographic location.
Roll or three of toilet paper
roll of vet wrap or similar self adhesive bandage
pack of 25 .410 shells #6, dozen or so slugs for same, box of 100 .22 shells
my savage 42 O/U .410/22 I also have a snake charmer .410 only but feel the O/U is more realistic for survival
I made my carrying case from a length of 3" PVC with screw caps on both ends. Knife, machete and Hatchet are attached to tube whole thing is attached to a web Suspender part of the alice system

see link for survival books this place has a good listing also thorw there names in to half.com to see if you can get them for like 3.25 +media mail of like 3.25 a $18+$6 s&H you could get four used books for the price of 2 new? also the venomous sank book would be a good one if you live in Mississippi or Louisiana etc most of all if you have had a hurricane and have to trek mile to get were you want. by the way you are not nuts to even bring this up it is a great idea to have a small suvial kit for earth quakes, floods ,tornado's,hurricanes, typhoons, etc... etc.. i can under stand it if in a climate pron to those weather issues if stocking up for the zombie apocalypses seek help j/k...which some should have a long time ago lol's like my dads best mans at his wedding brother lol's stock piling for the big one and zombies which is just radical nonsense to me lol's guy live in Michigan not prone to weather problem but has been acting a tad funny since Obama got in office lol's any ways idiots do as they do we say around here lol's. we worry about him and love him like family but what can you do when he move to the middle of no were cause he is worried about them dropping the big one cause of Obama lol's hay that why we got our freedoms and he live by the words "my freedom" to much i think.... any ways try not to be that way you should survive just fine lol's. i think Obama is one of the greatest president yet father retiree could not afford insulin and other medications to thin blood etc to prevent heart attacks etc... etc ... to save his life now with the new policy's it helps but there are reason i don't like him. it is a change we need but i think he took to much lol's for the needy... keep it simple even candle. like for light and etc should be included in the kit.
