Keep in mind, this was done in less than 2 months from the idea to finish. Several other critical war production plants received the same treatment at astonishing speed. In the Solomon Islands the Imperial Japanese Navy attempted the same thing at Munda; the Allies detected the airfield being rapidly finished under camouflage, and 3 days before it became operational, landed a reinforced pair of Marine Regiments and several companies of Naval Construction Battalions ("Sea Bees"), seized it and even more quickly enlargened and reinforced it, swiftly using it against it`s former owners. Not 1 Japanese plane ever landed or took off from it, although thousands of Allied aircraft did...

Did you know the Federal interstate system has to have a 1 mile long straight in every 5 mile length? Emergency runway.
Manufactures of heavy equipment had to be able to produce military equipment on their production lines.
Aluminum was developed as a replacement for steel, all steel went to the war.
Back on those day EVERY AMERICAN pitched in to help the war effort.
The Japanese didn't launch ground assault on US soil because every American owned a gun.

Correct about the highways. In most NATO countries the same is true, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Britain all have specially constructed "heavy` sections close to 7,000 long that are capable of handling C-5 "Galaxy" cargo aircraft as well as C-130s and C-17s, plus every tactical attack and fighter aircraft NATO flies other than KC-135 tankers and the B-52s. There are approx. 11,000 of them all over NATO countries, with the idea of the `shell` game- you can destroy the main airfields, but trying to destroy ALL of these ad hoc landing strips some with aprons along side the reinforced cement highways would be utterly impossible. btw, the Imperial Japanese never attempted an invasion because it was a country of at that time only 61 million persons total against a country with a population of 190 million, unless every man, woman and child was involved...not `EVERY` American then (or now) owns a gun. (but many of us own MORE than 1, which kinda makes up for it...)

I think it was likely more the "impression" that every American owned a gun ... than the actual fact. Sort of like the impression that most every Korean I talked to, when I was over there in 1969, thought that every American owned a big home, two cars, had a huge bank account, and carried two or three credit cards.

That is the impression worldwide. Still. Good.

Considering the commonly accepted figures per person income world wide averages less than $3,700 YEARLY, it`s easy to understand their misunderstanding on that...more than 2/3rds of the global population earns less than 1/2 of even that.
