Personally, I like it. Maybe I can stop avoiding this forum now. Before people were far too quick to attack others with opposing viewpoints, even when they were wrong. And I'm talking both ends of the political spectrum.

There are plenty of other forums on the internet where one can discuss politics and flame one another out in the open.

I enjoy these kinds of forums, don't get involved a whole lot because right wing hardliners seem to have very little respect for any opinion other than their own and almost without fail when they are confronted with facts that seem to say otherwise, they resort to insulting whomever they might be having the discussion with as though slapping somebody in the face changes the facts somehow, christians attempting to argue the validity of their belief do the same thing.... It seems for the most part they just want to pat each other on the back and say "we showed him didn't we" other than wishing to have a legitimate discussion.

Unfortunately, Left wingers tend to spin the facts, and disrespect just as much ... or don't offer any substantiated facts for their side of the argument, either. All the finger pointing, name calling, and divisiveness doesn't seem to be very conducive to a legitimate conversation, as you say. But, when ideologies are so far apart, the middle ground is left barren ... and the only way a constructive discussion can be waged, is when both sides are willing to step towards the middle.

Even the popular vote in the election showed that the country is nearly evenly divided (51%-49%) between the far left & right party ideologies. Both sides want to say "I'm right, & the other side is the problem" ... so no wonder we can't get any compromises between them. They've both positioned themselves into a corner, from which they cannot extricate themselves without appearing to agree with the other (wrong) side's view/ideas. And the same problem exists here, since few, if any, of us are political scholars or experts in any of the political fields ... and can only voice what our news media talking heads tell us is "the truth", or we react from a personal passion towards one subject or the other.

No one here "really" believes they're going to make someone else change their party affiliation, or their stance on the current subject matters ... they're just voicing their opinion & frustrations with the situation at hand (or how they view that situation, from their own perspective). Oddly enough, the very members that got all this started, and caused the creation of the WOT ... haven't joined in the debates since shortly after the WOT was introduced.

You have a good point there CP, but you say that the only way a constructive discussion can be waged, is when both sides are willing to step towards the middle. That is true, but with the current issue of gun control, I'm like what Tom Petty said "I stand my ground, and won't back down". I refuse to concede not one bit.

Oddly enough, the very members that got all this started, and caused the creation of the WOT ...

CP, as I remember it, the WOT board was created after three or four "whiners" (who never posted on the OT board) complained about the board that they did not participate in. Apparently, watching other people enjoy themselves was just more than they could stand, so they complained. I always wondered who was standing behind them with a gun pointed at their heads, forcing them to read the OT board.

The "old" OT board had existed for years with loads of political discussions. There were problems from time to time, but mostly that was because somebody was trying to cause a problem. I've seen much worse on other CDC forums.

It's unlikely anybody here is trying to win brownie points from the folks that have a different point of view from themselves, if we didn't enjoy arguing our point of view we wouldn't be here in the first place, we don't however need to disrespect the folks we might have a differing opinion with... If insulting somebody is the best argument you have you should at least have enough respect to keep your mouth shut.

If you'd been here longer, you'd know that nobody hates the Beav. As one of the very few liberals on this board, he's naturally gonna take a lot of the heat. We just like poking him, and he enjoys poking back.
